The PIE lab focuses on understanding the biophysical mechanisms by which the inner ear encodes sensory information, and how these functions degrade with damage or injury. We approach these questions using various technicques including non-invasive measurement of bio-acoustic signals, design of novel signal processing strategies, patch-clamp electrophysiology to study sensory transduction and computational modeling. All of these approaches draw heavily on the quantitative/analytical skills that should appeal to Engineering and Physics students interested in studying biological systems.
